Training Tips: Roqui’s Favorites

Make the Bond
It all begins with a simple formula: quantity time = quality time. In the wild, canids spend their lives with each other which means they are looking for that relationship that is as present as they are. Working on having them around as much as possible will give them the assurance they need to open up and give you the relationship you are dreaming about.

75% is the Sweet Spot
Boundless energy can make even the best dog get a little distracted. Thats where exercise comes in. With Roqui, step one to our day is a hike, which drops him down to 75% of his energy. Here he is attentive, calm, and confident. Try this on your dog and let me know what results you get.

Time does not Exist
When working with Roqui, patience is the secret ingredient. There is no rush to this, and focusing on results rather than how quickly something is happening will help both of you in the long run. Your dog can do it, and when you set them up for success, I promise they will figure it out.

Recall Secrets: The Longline
How do you teach a dog that far away? use a longer leash. For dog lovers, there are few things more impressive than a dog that returns on command and few things more stressful than dog that does not come back when you need them to. Its possibly the most important command. Think of there recall training like rings aroud a tree with you at the center. Get their recall within the the nearest rings and use a long line to expand the distance while still maintain the ability to reach out and correct them. I use a flat 2 inch wide climbing rope from REI that you can buy by the foot. Start with a 30ft piece and go from there. A gentle hand is all it takes but the long line sets will set you and your dog up for success.
