Treats for a Dog that’s Allergic to EVERYTHING

Limited ingredients, quality food sources, and absurd amounts of testing all play a part in creating a food for a dog that loves food but food does not love them back. A few things to know about the subject of our story: Roqui is a purebred dog which means that he was bred for a purpose and/or look and not necessarily for longevity. In particular his white fur coat, which I must admit is beautiful and contrasts so well against the greens of a grassy field that you can see him a mile away, but it is a recessive trait. Bringing that to the surface means that other issues also surface, such as deafness and stomach issues. Roqui wasn’t deaf but when I found him all skinny and pink, the stomach problems were there. I was a noob to the world of allergies and thought that changing his food to an expensive big store brand would solve everything. Purchase after purchase, brand after brand, different foods worked until they didn’t. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands.

They say necessity is the mother of all invention and with Roqui’s health on the line I knew I had to do something but where do you start? With the amount of time I realized Roqui needed to be outside, I thought creating a treat for those long backcountry hikes would be a good place to start. Therefore, I researched everything I could about canine nutrition. Books, scientific studies, and expert interviews all were abosrbed. With every test, I got a little closer to the right ingredients. Along the way I realized whole chicken, not byproduct, made a big difference which got me building from there. After years of this, I finally got it right and Roqui’s sensitive stomach hasn’t had problems since. Now I know this recipe wasn’t a magic pill but having a treat that wouldn’t cause issues and gave him a healthy reliable source of energy, made a world of difference to us. After talking with other dog lovers, I realized that Roqui was not alone. With knowledge meant to be shared, I created City Dog to bring that same gentle treat that worked for Roqui’s sensitive stomach to others.
